painting vinyl siding

Vinyl siding can be painted successfully with a little planning and know how.  Below are the simple steps to follow along with some product suggestions.  This process can also be used to paint vinyl shutters and vinyl trim.
  1. Clean your siding using a scrub brush or power washer with a prepaint cleaner.  All surface contaminants and mildew need to be removed.  Use a pump up garden sprayer to apply the cleaner and scrub if necessary.  If using a power washer be careful not to inject water into corners, underneath siding, or at windows.
  2. Use a good quality 100% acrylic exterior paint.  Priming should not be necessary.  Some good options include Sherwin Williams Duration or Benjamin Moore Regal Select Revive for Vinyl Siding
  3. Selecting the correct color is VERY important when painting vinyl siding.  If you pick a color that has not been tested your siding could warp when it gets heated up with the sun.  Several manufacturers have vinyl safe colors that are tested and approved to apply on vinyl siding.  They have a decent selection of light and dark colors in these and you would be wise to pick from these so you don't create bigger problems for yourself.
